Governmental Affairs

"If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

Overview

The TAR Governmental Affairs program develops, advances, and implements the legislative and regulatory objectives of TAR at the state level. It consists of three elements that work together to maximize the political clout of REALTORS®: A strong grassroots advocacy network, a powerful political action committee, and a team of skilled lobbyists.Grassroots Legislative Action Center

On January 1, 2006, TAR will launch a new online legislative action center as part of a nationwide initiative to improve the grassroots effectiveness of REALTORS®. The legislative action center will be powered by the GetActive software system. The National Association of REALTORS® is paying all license fees for the software system for all state and local Associations.

GetActive has the ability to integrate fully with the National REALTORS® Database System (NRDS), has proven experience with clients larger than NAR, and has extensive experience with multi-layered organizations and “hub” functionality.

Local Associations will have the opportunity to operate a GetActive hub after June 15, 2006. You will hear much more about the new system as TAR begins branding it to the members.

Political Coordinator Program

The Political Coordinator Program is a grassroots initiative designed to inform and mobilize members of TAR who share a personal relationship with one or more members of the Tennessee General Assembly. Political Coordinators serve as the primary spokespersons to legislators regarding TAR’s public policy priorities.

There is one Political Coordinator for each member of the General Assembly; one assigned to each of the 33 Senators, and one assigned to each of the 99 Representatives. Each Political Coordinator organizes a Contact Team made up of additional REALTORS® to assist in their efforts.

The TAR President, in consultation with the President-elect, appoints the Political Coordinators. They serve for the duration of that General Assembly (i.e., two years). The Governmental Affairs Committee’s Grassroots Subcommittee conducts oversight for the program.

Governmental Affairs Committee

The purpose of the Governmental Affairs Committee is to establish linkages and ongoing relationships with all aspects of the political and governmental processes in Tennessee and to assure a communication network between all levels of government, candidates for public office, various officials and governmental officers and bodies, the local Associations of REALTORS® in Tennessee and the Tennessee Association of REALTORS®.

The Governmental Affairs Committee is comprised of eighteen members who serve two-year staggered terms. Each year the President appoints nine members plus a Chairman and a Vice Chairman.
